Your business has been growing rapidly and you therefore need an advanced data centre to keep up with the growth rate. The top 10 data center companies’ primary objective is for it to remain responsive, efficient and cost-effective. With big data influx, enterprise IT experts are struggling to keep up with high demands for storage and computing resources. Contemporary data centers are about using technologies important in improving economics, scale and performance. Actually, days when people used to build expensive proprietary hardware silos are long gone and companies still require and rely on massive data centers to power their day-to-day operations.

The following are some of the largest data centers in the world.

Facebook

With over 1.13 billion active users, Facebook is among the busiest social media sites globally and has constructed extensive infrastructure to support its already massive and ever-growing user base. Launched on February 2004, from the Mark Zuckerberg’s (the founder’s) dorm room at the Harvard University, the social media site relied on a single server.  Today, the company’s servers are housed in numerous huge data centres around the globe. Facebook has never stopped constructing new data centres and searching for new data centre sites since it launched the first company-built and ran server  farm situated in Prineville, Oregon in April 2011.

Each of their data centers accommodates thousands of computer servers, which they have already networked and linked to the outside world via fibre optic cables. Every time you share your photos on Facebook, servers in the data centers receive them and distribute them to your friends.

Facebook needs massive storage infrastructures to house its tremendous stockpile of photos that has been growing steadily as users add millions of new photos each day. As the network expands, its capability to support videos – 360-degree videos most recently – has necessitated additional room. Even more, the company’s infrastructure has to support services for over 1 million websites and thousands of mobile applications using Facebook Connect Platform.

In addition to its huge data centres, Facebook leases additional servers that process tens of thousands of data pieces and delivers information selected within one second. The company constructed its first data centre in Prineville, Oregon. They later constructed other data centres in Forest City, Lulea, North Carolina, Sweden and Altoona, Lowa. The capacity of data centres within the location has always been expanding as the company constructs new data centre facilities. Facebook has been leasing data centre spaces in Virginia, Ashburn and Singapore.

Google

Google’s one of top 10 data centers in usa situated at The Dalles in Oregon – a 164,000-square foot building opened in 2016 – increased the company’s investment by $1.2 billion. Its overall size stands at 352,000 square feet divided among the three standing buildings. First opened in the year 2006, the facility employs over 175 people. Google has already announced plans of adding another $600,000 data centre around one mile from the current location to bring its investment to $1.8 billion. The new centre is expected to employ around 50 individuals directly.

Likewise, the Oklahoma Pryor Creek data centre has been expanding. The data centre, which went online for the first time in the year 2011 with around 130,000 square feet ($160,000 facility), expanded to include rooms for the staff. After Google announced the expansion earlier in 2016, no one thought that it would be complete very soon. The Pryor Creek data centre represents $2 billion investment.

The cost for setting up the other data centre in Eemshaven Netherlands stood at $773 million – in Google’s fashion there are no words on size. Overall, the company’s capital expenditure for the year 2016 alone was under $10.2 billion. We can account a large portion of the amount for the data centres and the land acquisitions.

Microsoft

Microsoft’s Dublin Data Centre exemplifies a milestone in the world of data design. The facility powers Microsoft’s worldwide cloud computing operations, while using less water and energy than the other data centres of the same scale consume. The Dublin centre has been operating at a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.25, compared to the average of around 2.0.

Some of the design innovations that drive the data centre’s efficiency include “free cooling” system, which uses the outside air for cooling purposes and the server pod design, which supports warmer operating temperatures in the server space using hot aisle containment. According to Microsoft, the server rooms can operate at temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees F), which is warmer than most data centres – which range between 62 degrees F and 72 degrees F.

NAP of the Americas, Miami

The NAP of the Americas is among the largest data centres in the world. The massive Terremark Worldwide data fortress situated in downtown Miami was opened in June 2001 to offer a data centre footprint around 750,000 square feet when the dot-com age was taking hold. This six-story facility has survived the downturn and has turned into the primary connectivity hub for Latin America and Southeastern US, offering worldwide and US military domain name system.

The Americas NAP can withstand Category-5 hurricane with the exteriors protected by 7 inches thick concrete panels that are steel-reinforced. The Six Hitech rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems support its power infrastructure. Over 160 networks coverage within the building create a primary connectivity ecosystem. Three large globes located on the building’s roof house two 16-meter satellite dishes and 14-meter dish to offer backup connectivity for the mission-critical customers if the facility loses its fibre feeds.

The Next Generation Data Europe

The large Next Generation Data Europe situated in Newport Wales occupies two big data halls at 75,000 square foot.  Pne of top 10 data centers in Europe. The main goal of building the data centre was to house LG’s semiconductor plant, which LG vacated soon after the completion in the year 1998. NGD changed the building into a three-story centre that features more than 375,000 square feet of technical space. The capacity is enough for over 19,000 storage cabinets and servers. The data centre is made to house private data centre pods and has shell space for accommodating installations for data centre containers.
