HMD Global, the Finnish company that holds the brand rights of Nokia will introduce a new product this January. It is the Nokia 6. A mid-range smartphone whose great novelty is the incorporation of Android as an operating system. More specifically, Android 7.0 Nougat.

Gone are the days when Nokia was trying not to disappear by adopting Windows Phone as a system in its Lumia. From now Nokia will be synonymous with Android, and with it hopes to regain some of the role lost in recent years.

After several years away from the smartphone market, the iconic Nokia brand is back together with Finland-based HMD Global. The new Nokia 6 is a mid-range phone introduced in China, market in which it will be sold exclusively, at least for the time being. HMD Global, the company that brings Nokia back to the smartphone market, has made it clear that this is only the beginning and throughout this year 2017 we will see more phones.

Nokia 6 + Android Nougat 7.0

HMD Global has started with a mid-range phone with acceptable specifications and a pretty good price. Its design also does not leave indifferent because it looks a well-cared aesthetic. It is made with a unibody aluminum 6000 series anodized design (the same one used on the iPhone 6), which gives it an elegant appearance.

Coming fully to its specifications the Nokia 6 has a screen of 5.5 inches with Full HD resolution and a pixel density of 401. Inside we find a Snapdragon 430 processor signed by Qualcomm and 4GB of RAM. The storage is 64GB expandable by microSD and its battery is 3000mAh.

In the section of image we find a main camera of 16 megapixels with aperture f / 2.0. The front features an 8 megapixel camera.

As I said, this is a mid-range phone, but this will not leave aside technologies like fingerprint reader, dual SIM and Dolby Atmos certification.

We know that the Nokia 6 comes with Android 7.0 Nougat, however, remains to be confirmed whether this carries some custom layer or if it will be pure Android.

The Nokia 6 will be on sale this month for $ 245, but as I mentioned, this will stay in China, so we will have to wait for them to announce other models for this market.

Nokia 6 technical specifications

The information that has transcended so far indicates that the new Nokia 6 will have the following features at the hardware level:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430
  • Display: 5.5 inches with FullHD resolution and a pixel density of 401ppi
  • Memory RAM: 4GB
  • Internal storage: 64GB expandable by SD.
  • Operating system: Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Camera: Rear of 16 megapixel f / 2.0 with PDAF and front of 8MP
  • Battery: 3000mAh with fast charge

In addition to this the terminal will also feature a fingerprint reader located on the front of the device, dual SIM and Dolby Atmos sound.

Product design and finishing

The visual design and finish of the terminal is very much in line with the rest of the mid-range terminals in the current panorama. It has a unibody body with metal finish in anodized aluminum. Comes with curved edges, and 2.5D arched screen. Both the upper and lower edges have a few additions a little darker, which may have some sense of premium to the terminal. But like everything else in this life, maybe it’s just a matter of taste.

Video teaser of Nokia 6

Just a few hours ago we saw on YouTube the first official teaser where we can appreciate in more detail how the new Nokia will look.

A Nokia with Snapdragon 835?

A few days ago, during CES 2017, we saw a supposed Nokia 8 make a presence at the stand of Qualcomm, the device that had no less than 6 GB of RAM and 24 megapixel camera with OIS and EIS, dual front speakers and Snapdragon 835, this team awakened the spirits of more than one follower of the brand and the rumor that it was the Nokia 8 began to spread through the network.

Unfortunately the rumor has been denied by the chipmaker himself, Qualcomm has clarified in a statement, that the device used is a dummy or model with a generic reference design. This prototype is functional since it is intended to demonstrate the benefits of its latest SoCs, but it is not commercially produced and in fact has nothing to do with the Nokia brand.

Perhaps we have to wait a long time before seeing a flagship weight with the Nokia logo and is that not only must give the technical conditions, but also the commercial and even legal for Nokia to completely revive, we will all look forward to.

Price and availability

It seems that HMD Global does not want to risk too much, and for now the Nokia 6 will only be marketed in China, a country that on the other hand, has 552 million smartphone users. Therefore, if we want to do with one of these handy we will have to go to some trustworthy online store that sells it. Its departure date is expected for the coming weeks, and its starting price will be about 230 euros ($ 245 or so).

The company plans to launch up to 6 new handsets this year, so the Nokia 6 would be just the tip of the iceberg of everything to come in the coming months.

We remember that Nokia was the world leader in the mobile telephony sector between 1998 and 2011, and that was gradually losing its leadership to the detriment of other brands such as Apple and Samsung. This loss of presence was also due to the growth of Android, which Nokia refused to adopt, betting on Windows Phone as an operating system, and condemning it to a much smaller market share.

The Nokia 6 cell phone marks the return of the Nokia brand to the smartphone market, this time hand in hand with the Android platform. The Nokia 6 cell phone features a 5.5-inch 1080p screen protected by Gorilla Glass 2.5D, a Snapdragon 430 processor with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, 13-megapixel main camera with PDAF autofocus, 8MP front camera , 3000 mAh battery and runs Android 7.0 Nougat. The Nokia 6 cell phone is categorized as Balanced among all Nokia cell phones.

WHY IS NOKIA 6 NOT THE TECHNOLOGICAL BEAST WE WERE WAITING FOR?

HMD Global, a licensee of Nokia brand rights, introduced a few days ago a new phone with Android operating system, this new device carries the Nokia logo and has excited fans of the brand, but this new team has left mixed feelings, Because despite having some interesting specifications like 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory, runs with a processor that at first glance gives the impression of off-putting, we refer to the Snapdragon 430.

The high expectations of consumers who were expecting a brown beast with the greatest power and the latest advances, have not been satisfied with this phone. In fact, the new Nokia 6 is a phone clearly oriented to the mid-range that within its range, yes, offers excellent specifications and above all at a price more than attractive, about 230 euros to change, but only for sale in China for now.

But what is the strategy of HMD for this new era of Nokia, why they chose the Snapdragon 430 as the heart of the new Nokia 6 ?, the answer could be in the conditions in which HMD signed with Microsoft for the rights of Nokia as a brand.

Well, apparently the deal between Microsoft and FIH Mobile Ltd., a subsidiary of Hon Hai / Foxconn Technology Group, and HMD Global, only deals with the feature phones, the agreement that was announced by Microsoft on 18 Of May 2016, includes 4,500 employees who will be transferred to the Taiwanese group, rights to use the Nokia brand, software for these simple terminals, related services and contracts with different suppliers.

In this way HMD and Foxconn are authorized to manufacture only basic phones using the Nokia brand, HMD global is based in Finland, the birthplace of the brand and is directed by Arto Nummela, a former Nokia who became part of Microsoft when This took over the mobile business of the first. But what is an undeniable fact is that Nokia returns.
