The DJI Mavic 2 drone series have expanded the Mavic’s line of products beyond their two most successful products: the Mavic Air and the Mavic Pro. These two drones – Mavic 2 Zoom and the Mavic 2 Pro – share the same flight specifications and dimensions, but the cameras are different. This guide will help you make an informed decision if you are planning to buy any of the two.

Brief description of the two Mavic’s

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Or Mavic 2 Pro

The producer announced the Mavic Pro in the year 2016 as a folding drone. This drone was not perfect but it facilitated the development of DJI devices and other drones. Originally, the Mavic helped manufacturers develop portable and accessible consumer drones and brought in a series that now consists of the Mavic Spark and the Mavic Air.

Within two years, the world’s biggest manufacturer of drones unveiled the product’s successor. Imaging was an important part of this upgrade and actually, the Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro are unlike devices – the feature different cameras.

The branding is somehow confusing but the aim of DJI is to clarify that the camera is the main thing. In other words, video and photograph makers have been the DJI’s main target. And apart from its cameras, the Mavic 2 is not totally different from the predecessor. The manufacturer chose to add more camera features, which now include improved variety for the best shots in a various light settings.

The Mavic 2 Pro is the most expensive drone. The product is the first to boast the acquired Hasselblad. The camera is large than that you expect on the Mavic 2 Zoom and offers improved quality images. The Camera produces 20 megapixel photos and utilizes the proprietary Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology of Hasselblad to reproduce accurate colours. The user can adjust the aperture, which provides shoots between f/2.8 and f/11 for a variety of lighting conditions.

To produce the Mavic 2 Zoom, DJI focused on the2X optical (24-48mm) and the 2X digital zoom. The digital zoom feature combines to assume the effects of the included 96mm lens. The 12-megapixel camera has new “Super Resolution,” which the manufacturer developed to tic the nine zoomed-in photos. The product is super high-resolution 48-megapixel shots. The manufacturer used this feature to target the landscape photography market.

The Dolly Zoom mode, which zooms in objects as the drone moves to the opposite direction, provides disorienting shots familiar to individuals who have seen Hitchcock films. The other pre-programmed Hyperlapse shots to expect include:

  • Free – this feature drives the Mavic 2 drones manually when taking Hyperlapse videos.
  • Circle – the pre-programmed Hyperlapse shot automatically drives the drone in circular patterns around the object. The user has the option of creating timelapse videos to capture the whole action.
  • The Course Lock – this one fixes the drone’s camera on the target object and drives the drone forward in a straight direction to produce a unique view.
  • Waypoint – with the Waypoint pre-programmed Hyperlapse shot, expect complex flight paths on both the GPS and the altitude coordinates. It will help you capture any complex shot.

The manufacturer worked hard to produce unique features that will make you a great photographer. Remember that you cannot swap the cameras.

The design

The producer tweaked the body of the two drones to make them aerodynamic. The introduced design has reduced the body-drag by around 19-percent. The new more streamlined outline helps the drones achieve 44-miles per hour. However, it has made them larger than the previous releases. If you prioritize size of other things, possibly for portability reasons, you might need to consider the other options.

The raked design of the propellers – on the drone’s wing tips – helps minimize the both the sound and the air drag. Unlike the other models, the Mavic 2 is very quiet. Moreover, the battery has an increased capacity, perhaps to accommodate the larger size. With the battery, you can fly this drone for 31-minutes on a single charge. The earlier models could fly for 28-minutes on a single charge.

The Sensors

The sensors mark another significant difference between the “Mavic 2 Zoom” and “Mavic 2 Pro.” The ½.3-inch sensor on the Zoom drone is similar to that you expect on the entry-level compact cameras and smartphones. On the other hand, the Mavic 2 Pro boasts a large 1-inch sensor – the one you expect on Sony RX100 series. Apart from offering higher resolution, the large sensor collects more light and therefore produces images that are more appealing.

The Obstacle Avoidance

The manufacturer has improved the obstacle avoidance on the two drones. Even more, they have improved the “Advanced Pilot Assistance System” (APAS) to help the drones fly around various obstacles instead of having to stop to avoid a collision. The lights mounted on the drone’s bottom facilitate better landings on lower light. Lastly, the ActiveTrack uses three aboard front-facing cameras to make the object’s 3D map that can be easier to follow.

The price

The Zoom and the Pro drones go for $1,249 and $1,499 respectively. Even more, the manufacturer offers a standardised DJI Fly More Kit consisting of additional things like multi-battery charging hub, two batteries, and a bag in addition to extra propellers. To get the drones, you will need to visit DJI’s website.

What about the DLog-M 10-bit

The DLog-M 10-bit feature is only available with the Pro drone. The product’s logarithmic tone curve allows the camera to preserve a great dynamic range and capture more details. Fundamentally, it captures low contrast images so that the shadows do not turn pure black and the highlights do not blow out. Therefore, the DLog-M 10-bit will make the work of most professionals easier.

10-bit represents the colour depth of each image and has nothing to do with the video file’s bitrate – 100 megabits per second on the two drones. Most photographers shoot videos and images in 8-bit colour, which offers 256 luminance levels per every colour channel. The 10-bit has increased the number to 1,024 and you should therefore expect smooth transitions between the rich colours.[‘

Choosing a Mavic 2

Most people are likely to go for the Zoom drone because it provides great flexibility with the 2x zoom lens. It opens up automated creative shots and fun. The Pro drone is suitable for professionals. It provides clearer images.
